Wunderkammer. Toby jug / character jug in the shape of a Welsh woman

Molti anni fa a Cambridge acquistammo un piccolo Toby che chiamammo Bishop; aveva la perfetta faccia da nume tutelare, intelligente, sincera, piena di bonomia; ci sorrideva sempre, il prezzemolo gli stava d'incanto dentro il cappello, conversavamo. Un giorno Nunchestro lo ruppe. In preda ai sensi di colpa lo cercò negli anni su rete, e dice pure che l'aveva trovato, ma all'epoca non acquistava online; successivamente, su quell'onda, cominciò a comperare Toby Royal Doulton e a ficcarli nella libreria del suo studio.  Negli ultimi mesi ne ho comperati due anch'io, con la scusa di regalarglieli; sono "eccentrici", non doultoniani. Uno è questo, un Toby-madame, forse nemmeno inglese. L'altro è un Toby classico, dello Staffordshire, patria dei Toby, ma dicono a suo modo singolare anche quello, forse per il suo abito flow blue.

A porcelain toby jug / character jug in the shape of a Welsh woman serving dink from a jug. The jug is well modelled and decorated, with an attention to detail paid to the detail of the subject. The jug is unmarked except for 2 characters painted to the base. They look to be "71" with the 7 crossed in continental style suggesting the piece may not originate in the UK. The jug stands just a little less than 6" tall. In fact it is closer to 25cm again suggesting a continental origin, Germany perhaps. It is in very good condition with no chips of cracks, though there is a little wear to the decor, principally the gilded bands that decorated the jug and other limited areas of the design.
